The National Memorial Chorten

It was built in 1974 initiated by Her Majesty Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, in honor of her late son, The Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck who is regarded as the “Father of Modern Bhutan.” The king envisioned the chorten as a symbol of world peace and prosperity. Although he passed away before its completion, the chorten embodies his vision of harmony and compassion. Therefore, the chorten is intended to serve as a space for spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation.

The chorten stands tall with its dazzling white walls, golden spires, and richly decorated carvings. It is surrounded by prayer wheels and small shrines that enhance its sacred aura. The site is always alive with devotees circumambulating the chorten in a clockwise direction, spinning prayer wheels, chanting mantras, or offering butter lamps. The chorten is set amidst well-maintained gardens and vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Moreover, the sound of prayers, the hum of spinning prayer wheels, and the fragrance of incense fill the air, making the chorten a profoundly calming and meditative space.
